Research Abstract

A new optical processing system was devised takimg a hint from an imaging system by compound eyes of an insect. Instead of the classic image formation system to form one image with one optical lens, a new approach was proposed and tried to form one image by superposing micro lens array plates of a few tens micron diameter.
At first, the quartz lens arrays, where micro convex lenses of the same size/characteristic are arranged in 2 dimensions, are produced by special reactive ion etching. It is confirmed that a new image formation system can be built as desired by setting these two plates at a fixed spacing and at a small rotation difference. And it is found that "an image rotates by 90 degree". Using an optical lens design/analysis simulation software, this image formation system is analyzed. Ray tracing by geometrical optics approximation is also applied.
Next it is planned to make it clear limitation of the image quality of this system. It is also planned to devise a video input device of thickness less than 1 mm by combining CCDs in this system.
