Research Abstract

Transient elastic waves inside a transversely isotropic surface structures are investigated. Exact analytical method is developed using the eigenfunction expansion and extended IIu's potential function based on the theory of three dimensional elastodynamics. Numerical calculations are made for impact response problems of circular plates, plates in plane strain state, infinite plates and infinite strips. Numerical results at some locations of interest are shown for a partially distributed uniform load suddenly applied on a plate top surface. Comparisons between the results of isotropic and transversely isotropic cases are made in detail. Maximum stress reponse is sligthly affeced using tranversely materials. In the case of transversely, infinite plate, the surface stress is significantly affeced by the surface wave (Reyleigh wave), and then very sharp and discountinuos stress responses are seen.
