Research Abstract |
This study is to survey the today's condition of historic scenery along old Tokaido Highway, to find characteristics about the historic highway for walking travelers and to try the way to utilize it for long range walking path in future. The study field is within Shiga prefecture. The traditional buildings occipy from 50% to 70% in the old post towns. In the areas Easter than Ritto district, traditional buildings are preserved in better condition. The farm houses made gardens in front of them, which make beautiful scenery along the old highway. Traditional way of building is still alive along the highway. The historic elements in the public space such as rivers, bridges or trees on the sides of the road have generally lost historic features. Most of the temples near the highway once introduced for sight seeing in the Edo period exist rather in good condition. It is found that many people forgot the location of the old highway and hope to improve the road for cars after the questionnaire investigation in Kusatsu old post town district. But we should ask them again after informing people the historic character of the road together with scenic rehabilitation plans.
