Research Abstract |
The research had been done in Kagoshima and Yamagata prefecture from 1996 to 1997. The object of the project is to clarify rural women's role in community and family life. The research shows women's role and life in rural area have been changed drastically in these days. We think that an approach different from the existing one should be taken in order to bring this theme to a settlement. In Shounai-area in Yamagata a lot of rural women have been busy in domestic work, but most of them want to commit in other activities in their community and also some paid work. Some women had social networks with urban cooperative groups of women. They had a useful relationships with each other. The main common topics among them are safety of foods, environmental issues in community, and healthy family life. They are contemporary social problems indeed. The agricultural cooperative in Shounai has a women's group and the activities of the group are : (1) food market of vegetables and some processed foods (2) production of non-chemical soap (3) preservation of river. This case study teaches us the meaning and possibilities of rural-urban network. Togo-cho in Kagoshima is a mountainous unfavored area. It has so many social problems, like old people's hard life or lack of young men and women. Agricultural production are not so vital, but some women have initiative of community action. They want to organize some support network to keep their community vital community life. In this case the governmental or municipality's support to combine various local resources have a great deal role. One further step in research is needed in order to make it possible for this study to be applied extensively in a practical way.
