Research Abstract

We immunohistochemically examined surfactant protein A (SP-A) and D (SP-D) and Clara cell 10 kDa protein (CC10) in lung cancer tissue specimens. SP-A and CC10 were found only in cases of lung adenocarcinoma ; The positivities of SP-A and CC10 in cases of lung adenocarcinoma were 56% and 32%, respectively. SP-D was found in cases of lung adenocarcinoma and lung squamous cell carcinoma ; the positivities of adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma were 54% and 30%, respectively. SP-A,SP-D and CC10 were determined by means of ELISA using specific antibodies. High values of SP-A and SP-D were found in 47% and 45%, respectively, of malignant pleural effusions due to lung adenocarcinoma, whereas high values of CC10 was found in none of them. High values of SP-D was found in 33% of malignant effusions due to squamous cell carcinoma. Using a monoclonal antibody TY-5 against CC10/hUP-1, we examined CC10 expression in 44 cases with stage l lung adenocarcinoma. CC10 expression was found in 16 of the 44 cases with stage l lung adenocarcinoma. CC10-negative lung tumors had significantly greater stromal induction than that in CC10-positive lung tumors. The postoperative recurrence in patients with CC10-negative lung tumor (12 of the 28 patients) was 3.4-fold of that in patients with CC10-positive lung tumor (two of the 16 patients). CC10 presenting in lung adenocarcinoma cells may be associated with the induction of tumor dormancy.
