Research Abstract |
In order to evaluate xerostomia and taste disturbance after radiotherapy for patients with head and neck tumors including malignant lymphomas, retrospective study was made for 40 patients who had recieved radiotherapy 40 Gy or more to their head and neck region. Subjective xerostomia was assessed using questionare that measured difficulty with eating, speech and sleep. To evaluate objective xerostomia, salivary gland juice was measured. Subjective xerostomia and objective one were well correlated each other and improved gradually. Subjective taste disturbance was assessed similarly using questionare that measured difficulty with sweetness, hotness, sourness and bitterness. Taste disk was used to evaluate taste disturbance objectively. Subjective taste disturbance and objective one were well correlated each other and also improved gradually. With these results, trial for protection against xerostomia and taste disturbance was started by using oral administration of pilocarpine and other drugs.
