Research Abstract |
To examine the role of interferon-gamma (IFN-gamma) in graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in non-irradiated (Brown Norway*Lewis) F1 hybrid rats injected with spleen cells from parental strain rats (Brown Norway), we studied the serum level of IFN-gamma and the effect of IFN-gamma administration. An increase in serum IFN-gamma levels was noted on day 7 at which time none of the recipients showed any signs of GVHD,and marked at the time of onset of GVHD.Administration of exogenous IFN-gamma accelerated splenomegaly and the severity of the tongue lesion, but had no significant effect on the time of onset of GVHD and the immnohistological features of the tongue lesion in GVHD rats. These results suggest that IFN-gamma is closely related to the development of GVHD in this rat model.
