Research Abstract |
We compared the frequencies of apo A-IV polymorphism at codon 347 and 360 in 40 hyperlipidemic patients with 131 healthy controls. All healthy controls and hyperlipidemic patients studied here had Thr/Thr at codon 347. This result was different with a report in Western, which showed the frequency of Ser allele was 0.144 to 0.216. On the other hand, the frequency of Gln/llis at codon 360 in hyperlipidemic patients was 17.5%, which was lower than 22% in controls although there was no statistical difference between them. It is well known that Gln/Gln and His/His at codon 360 are corresponded to A-IV-1 and A-IV-2, respectively at protein level. It has been reported that subjects with A-IV-2 show higher HDL-C and LCAT activity compared to those with A-IV-1. In addition, A-IV-2 regulates cholesterol absorbtion in the small intestine. These isoforms, thus, have different functions in the lipid metabolism. In view of this point, few frequency of Gln/His (A-IV-2) in hyperlipidemic patients may indicate that this varient is associated with the cause for hyperlipidemia. However, in the present study, we could not find the difference in the frequency of apo A-IV polymorphism among subtypes of hyperlipidemia, but further study will be necessary in large scale of number.
