The purpose of this study was to examine the situation and the problems of the training programs for foreign nurses in Japan and consider the effective program. The subujects were 2 foreign nurses who had been trainees in Japan and 9 nurses who had inbolved in the training programs for foreign nurses in their hospitals and institutes. The method of the study was un-structured interview for about one hour. The results of the study were as follows ; 1) Some of the foreign nurses trainees had the physical symptoms like cold caused by fatigue and environmental changes and the unstable mental state like homesick caused by concern about their families, especially their children. Also, there were the gap between their purposes and the reality of the training programs. 2) The trainees were given the orientation about everyday life and made arrangement for the living condition like housing, transportation, and econimic situation. 3) The human relations between the trainees and staff were considered. 4) The Japanese trainers felt that language was very important in the training programs and they devised the way of communication and training depend on the trainees' ability of Japanese. 5) Because the trainees'purposes were unclear, the trainers felt difficult to grasp the trainees'purposes and concerned about the methods of teaching and evaluating them. 6) The trainers assumed poitive attitudes toward the trainees, but they thought that the trainees were not aware of the care of patients'everyday life and regarded techniques as much important. In the future training programs for foreign nurses, it will be needed that the trainers who understand some languages make assessment of the trainees' readyness and purposes, plan specifically and evaluate them based on their purposes.
