| Research Abstract |
1. The head investigator on research trends of landscape studies and examined geography's position in the study circle. As a result, uniqueness of humanistic geography was clarified, though surveys from socio-economic geography's point of view has not been successful upto now. For the future development of this point of view, the auther proposed a theoretical framework for landscape issues.
2. Landscape policy in Japan's rural areas has progressed since 1980's and the most aggressive areas belong to hilly and mountainous areas which have experienced serious depopulation in postwar days.
3. Considering the significance of landscape policy for the sustainable development, it is confirmed that such policy was effective for overcoming the problems originated in the peripherality.
4. A case study of Kake cho in hilly and mountainous areas revealed that landscape conservation movement plyed an important role in vitalizing the central settlement.
5. A case study of Tyrolin in Austria suggested the importance of regionalism in conserving the traditional cultural landscape, comparing with Japan's experiences.
