Research Abstract

Background
Practical research was coducted into the difference between students of vary backgrounds who obtained information through visual and auditory means.
Auditory tests which gave information concerning vocabulary and grammar were produced. Student performance in these tests was compared with their performance in more traditional visual written tests. The results of 400 students were used in the research.
Preliminary Results
1.The native language of the students influenced their performance.
2.The new auditory tests were found to be more appropriate in accessing the language ability of Japanese language students than the traditional visual written tests.
Future Direction
1.Continue to monitor the learning process of students who have been accessed by the auditory tests.
2.Compare the ability of visual dominant and auditory dominant students.
3.Research to date suggests that the use of auditory tests to assess the performance of students may be more effective than traditional grammar and vocabulary tests. Continued research in this direction may lead to an important in the standard of placement tests.
