Research Abstract |
A total of 123 road sections of 100m to 150m in length was picked up from the highways 18 and 19 and ten odd subject drivers' brainwaves were measured while they were driving their own cars over the sections. Collected brainwave data was resolved into frequency spectra which were integrated over alpha-wave band width (8-13Hz), alpha1-wave band width (8-10Hz) and alpha2-wave band width to obtain each wave's power value. Also, indices concerning so-called 1/f fluctuation of alpha-wave were computed. Extensively conducted were the regression analysis with one of four alpha-wave chacteristics mentioned above as dependent variable and road envirenmental factors as independent variables. The derived results are as follows : 1. Clockwise curve sections (1) The wider the lane width is, the more comfortable a driver gets. (2) Existence of precipices or flat land on the left foreground of the road section gives uneasiness felling to a driver. (3) Any structure on the right diminishes amenity. 2. Counterclockwise curve section (1) The driver's unpleasantness increases as the radius of road curvature becomes shorter. (2) Structures, concrete retaining walls and rocky walls on the left of the road are liable to reduce amenity. (3) A driver gets more ease in proportion to the whole road width. (4) Precipices on the right of the road consists the unpleasantness factors whereas concrete retaining walls and rocky walls lead to the increase in amenity. (5) Structures, mountains and trees on the right foreground are pertinent to driving comfort. 3. Straight section (1) The wider lane width makes a driver feel better. (2) A sidewalk makes one of the factors increasing amenity. (3) If there are many warning signs along the road, driving comfor is considerably reduced. It must be because a driver is distracted by them. (4) Concrete or rocky walls on the right of the road section seem to bring some relief to a driver's mind
