Research Abstract |
Skeletal Muscle Contraction : Visualization with Ultra-fast Tagging MRI This study demonstrates quantitative visualization of the skeletal muscle contraction using a newly-developed tagging MRI with acquisition times of less than 2 seconds. The method is based on T1-weighted magnetization-prepared gradient echo imaging. Combining spatially selective RF tagging pulses, this sequence allows labeling and tracking of muscular action without the need for gated acquisition. After phantom examinations, human volunteer studies were performed with intentional contractions of various muscles at the lower-extremity. Among morphological variations, especially for the quadriceps muscle, contractile fashion of muscle "bellies" and contraction forces via fascia and tendon were demonstrated as displacement and alteration of the bright tagging stripes.
