Research Abstract |
Mastication is receiving an influence of anterior guidance. However, there are few reports that examined about the relation between mastication and anterior guidance. Lateral guide participates a significant function of anterior guidance. The aim of this study is that examines about an influence of changing of lateral guide upon the masticatory movement. An experiment was carried out total 4 subjects without canine occlusal contact with intercuspal position, consisted 3 male volunteers who do not have any TMD symptom and one female TMD patient. Two kinds of metal guide were prepared, one was M type canine lateral guide which the maxillary canine mesial facet guided the mandibular canine distal facet and another was D type which the maxillary canine distal facet guided the mandibular canine mesial facet. Gum mastication and masticatory like movement with empty mouth were carried out. Those movements were measured by using MM-J1 (Syoufu Co.) and a minicomputer (DEC Co.VAX Station 4000), and analyzed by a graphic terminal (Evans & Sutherland Co.PS 390). As a result, the range of mastication trace with both canine lateral guides was narrow compared with no guide, and the trend of narrowing was more M type than D type. For masicatory movements of working side condylar point projected horizontal plane, the trace of D type was more spread to retrolateral side than that of M type obviously. Masticatory like movement with empty mouth was more influenced than gum mastication by lateral guides. The trace of masicatory movement in TMD patient was stabilized by M type guide.
