Research Abstract |
The theme of the study was "Japanese Administratin in Taiwan and Okinawa". In accordance with this theme, a two-year field research was undertaken, with the major subjects being "Assimilation Policy in Taiwan under Japanese Administration and Okinawan Wxperience" in 1996 and "Mass psychology of the Taiwanese People under Japanese Administratin and the Image Held by Okinawans of Taiwanese People" in 1997. Our research work was conducted using historical documents and interviews with the people concerned from July 30・August 27,1996 in Taipei and Keelung and from July 26・August 12.1997 in Taipei.Hwalien, and Taitung. The documents collected furing this field research amounted to no less than 1500 pieces which have been put in order to be used for scientific analyzes. cts. 1. Scientific analysis to deepen knowledge has been made possible through the interdisciplinary approach of different academic fields such as Political Thought. Literature. Geography, History ahd Language. 2. Through the readings of numerous documents collected furing the field research, the image of Japanese assimilation policy in Taiwan became clearer than ever. Up to the present, this kind of study has been limited to vertical analysis, specially from the colonizer's point of view. Thus, our attempt was to elucidate the real face of Japanese assimilation policy, focusing on the colonized people's attitude toward it. 3. Through interviews with the local people such as scholars, ex-employees of the Governor's Office and other citizens, we have clarified the position and social role Okinawans plays in Taiwan during the Japanese occupation. As a useful foundation for further comparative study.these records will greatly help to elucidate the interrelation of Japanese assimilation policy in Taiwan and Okinawa. Less
