Research Abstract |
This research aimed to clarify the diversity and phylogenetic relationship of the higher plants distributed in southern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. In 1998 we surveyed the Arun River Region in eastern Nepal situated in the southernmost margin of the Plateau, and also the Hengduan Mountains in China situated in the easternmost margin of the Plateau. 1. In Nepal the research is focused on the following genera, Saussurea, Meconopsis, Saxifraga, Pedicularis and Rhododendron. 1) We collected the materials for cytotaxonomical studies in the field, 2) for morphological studies, 3) for population diversity, 4) for molecular phylogenetic studies, and 5) for the vertical distribution comparing with the related taxa. 2. In China the research is focused on the following genera, Potentilla, Juncus, Meconopsis, Saxifraga, Pedicularis, as done in Nepal. As the results of this research we have clarified and implemented the followings ; 1) for Potentilla it is confirmed that 24 species and 10 varieties are distributed in this region, one of which is a new species, Potentilla polyphylloides, 2) two new species are found in Juncus, Juncus gunggae and J.tradiphyllus, 3) for Saxifraga an enumeration of this region is published. 3. After the field research the collected materials are analyzed. 4. As a conclusion a report is published.
