Research Abstract

Ecotoxicolgical study on human exposure to trace elements was carried out for nonsmorking women lived in nonpolluted area in China.
A twin survey was conducted by the food duplicate method in a provincial capital and in a farming village in the vicinity of the city to compare the dietary intake of trace element, the food habits and soon.
The 24-hr food duplicate samples, venous blood and hair samples, daily urine samples, drinking water, rice and wheat flower were collected from two groups of 50 nonsmoking women each ; one group was in Jinan, capital city for of Shandong Province in China, and the other in a farming village of Baiquan some 40 km away from the city. They had also physical examinations including hematology and serum bio-chemistory tests.
Daily dietary lead intake was 25.8ug/day for Jinan women and 45.8ug/day for Baiquan women as geometric mean (GM) . The counterpart values for blood were 35.3ng/ml (GM) for Jinan women and 50.2ng/ml (GM) for Baiquan women. Both of dietary lead intake and blood lead for Baiquan women were significantly higher than those for Jinan women.
Daily dietary cadmium intake was 6.43ug/day for Jinan women and 5.93ug/day for Baiquan women as geometric means (GM) . The blood cadmium concentration was 0.48ng/ml (GM) for Jinan women and 0.29ng/ml(GM)for Baiquan women. Both of dietary cadmium intake and blood cadmium for Jinan women were slightly higher than those for Baiquan women.
International comparison with recently published data suggests that the exposure to lead in Baiquan is higher among East Asian countries and on the other side the exposure to cadmium in Biquan is the lowest among East Asian countryies.
