Research Abstract |
1.The situation of Wuchereria bancrofti infection in Matara (1) A total of 3384 people were examined. The microfilaria (mf) rate was 5.1%. There were 123 cases (5.1% of those examined) with filarial fever and 78 cases (3.3%) with elephantiasis/edema. (2) The positive rate of filarial circulating antigen was 20.7%, which was much higher than those obtained using conventional methods. The level of antigenemia was closely related to mf densities in the blood. Many 'antigen (+) and mf (-)' people were found. They constitute a new entity unknown to us before the antigenemia survey. 2.The effect of annual single-dose diethylcarbamazine (DEC) treatment at 6 mg/kg The single dose of DEC reduced mf count from the original 100% to 20% at 6 months, and to 27% at 12 months. If repeated yearly, the annual doses would reduce filarial transmission potential sharply. 3.Studies on mosquito vectors in Matara (1) Mosquito (Culex quinquefasciatus) infection rate was 4.9%. Infected mosquitoes were collected through a year, indicating that tha filarial transmission occurs year-round. (2) Permethrin impregnated curtain was effective to reduce mosquito biting densities for the period of 22 weeks. 4.Other activities Simple methods to determine serum concentration of anti-filarial drugs, and to measure circulating antigen level have been developed. PCR was successfully applied for the diagnosis of 2 species of lymphatic filariasis.
