Research Abstract |
Takaori, Kobayashi, and Okunishi visited Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in July 1996, where President Takaori presented a lecture "Well-controlled clinical evaluation of Chinese medicine." Thereafter, researchers of both sides exchanged their data and discussed to make up an effective study plan for assessment of Tong-Bi-Ling (TBL), a Chinese recipe invented by Prof.Chen for incurable diseases. Dr.Shen, a collaborator assigned by Prof.Chen, has joined our laboratory from August 1996 to March 1997. She prepared chemically some fractions containing active principles of TBL,and identified dulcitol as one of the candidates. In collaboration with us, she quantified dulcitol in TBL by HPLC analysis, and examined the pharmacological effects of TBL and dulcitol on rheumatoid arthritis induced in mice by immunizing with heterologous collagen. TBL improved arthritis symptoms and joint destruction on X-ray graphs. TBL also suppressed the increments in serum anticollagen antib

ody and in T-cell and B-cell areas in the spleen, suggesting an immunosuppressive action. Dulcitol (0.1g/kg body weight/day) showed similar effects as TBL on arthritis symptoms and X-ray findings. However, inhibitory effect of dulcitol on increase in anti-collagen antibody was not significant. FACS analyzes delineated that dulcitol improved abnormality in the ratio of CD4+ and CD8+ T-cell subsets in the spleen lymphocytes. Thus, dulcitol appears to represent some of beneficial effects of TBL on arthritis. New controlled clinical trials using TBL have been carried out in China, and attained significant progress which deserved to have gained a governmental grant of China. Prof.Chen visited us March 1997 to present and discuss the clinical outcome from new TBL trials on rheumatoid arthritis and tetanic spondylitis. Integrating their clinical with our basic results, we have attained a goal of the 1996 joint program, and have pointed out several important issues which await further studies in the future project.
