Research Abstract |
This project is an attempt to establish a practical method of using computerized corpora in the hope to make up the lacunae in the study of the history of the English language. Our original plan was to take up the Helsinki Corpus of the English Texts and the OED on CD-ROM for our material. In our actual research, However, we have expanded our scope to include various other materials and periods. We have thus employed even a Middle English poem to investigate the characteristic patterns of vocabulary, the result of which may in the future be used for the further study of the vocabulary in the EModE.We also conducted an international symposium on Ancrene Riwle at Osaka University on January 25,1996, inviting Prof. Tadao Kubouchi of the University of Tokyo and Prof. Yoko Wada of Kansai Unuversity as panelists, with nearly 50 participants. Proceedings of the symposium will be published separately later on in 1997. The main activities of the porject members during the research term can be su

mmarized as follows : Hideki Watanabe has made a corpus linguistic research into the OED on CD-ROM and obtained many lists of statistics indicating the relations between the citations therein from the philologists and linguists and the history of English studies. Arne Zettersten has investigated the usefulness and the limitations of using the Helsinki and other corpora for the study of EModE vocabulary and pronunciation. He has also made a comparative study in the U.S.of early American prose material for establishing pronunciation from written material. Furthermore, his contribution during the past two years to text philology and the EETS (Zettersten-Diensberg, forthcoming) has also been useful for the present project. Mitsunori Imai has investigated the function of the sentence-initial adverbial infinitive. A pilot search has been mede in the EModE section of the Helsinki Corpus and other Elizabethan texts. He has also provided a list of merisms found in a Middle English poem through a corpus linguistic analysis of the data. Less
