Research Abstract

This study attemps to examine the present situations and problems of multicultural education from comparative perspectives, laying stress on how public education systems cope with the increasing variety of ethnicity of students. The countries surveyed are Japan and six advanced countries in this field of study and practices, which are the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Australia. On the basis of the comparative analysis of related data and materials, this study clarifies possibilities and limits of multicultural education introduced at public elementary and secondary schools. In addition, collecting basic knowledge and applicable insights for the possible changes in the public education system in Japan is being attempted.
