Research Abstract |
This research is to clarify the relationship between school education and workplace of human resource in scientific and technological fields. For that purpose, a survey was conducted with focus on two points : employers' expectation for school education, and impacts of changes in social circumstances upon in-house training. Firstly, the study examines managers' expectation on three dimensions of capacity of workers : skill ; knowledge and attitude. This study covers four department of companies : human resource development (HRD) ; research and development (R&D) ; sales and operation. The survey showed that managers expect workers to acquire attitude in school education. Particularly, R&D, operation, and sales inclines to prefer attitude formation. Then, skill formation in school education is expected by R&D and operation departments. Previous research argued that managers emphasized the importance of providing knowledge in school education. However, according to the present result, it i

s maintained that only R&D underlines the knowledge of workers. Secondly, the more companies are influenced by changes in social circumstances, the more managers of the companies tend to reform personnel systems into rational ones such as systems based on meritocracy. For example, companies belonging to information industry is inclined to increase the annual cost per employee for in-house training. This is because of the nature of industry which puts pressure of rapid technological innovation on companies. To sum up, in order for companies to survive in competition of technological innovation, trainability of workers would become more important from now on. The preference of managers for attitude formation can be interpreted as the preference for human resource with flexibility to adjust themselves in technological innovation. Therefore, the university graduate need to enter in labor market with highly developed trainability. To produce more students with high trainability, universities are required to improve their quality of education. Less
