Research Abstract

The performance of ceramic materials depends generally on properties of surface and interface. In composites of metals, ceramics and polymers, the understanding of interfaces between different materials is very important. The aim of this project to discuss on recent research works of world-wide active scientists and members of this research, to find out the future way and to arrange the international symposium on the title of this project.
Following three workshops were held in this term.
(1) The 1st Workshop (October 24 and 25,1996, Matsushima, Miyagi ; 7 members)
Headinvestigator explained the aim of this project and each members presented their result on their own works. Discussion was conducted on the characteristic of this project. The importance to understand the recent activities on the interfaces of ceramics/metals and ceramics/polymers was realized. Members agreed to have invited talks at the succeeding workshops.
(2) The 2nd Workshop (January27 and 28,1997. Takeo, Saga ; 9members and 3 invited speakers)
Based on the discussion at the 1st workshop, all members presented their own works. Two invited talks of Kenji MORINAGA (Kyusyu University, Professor) and Toshio NARITA (Hokkaido University) are the activities on Metals and a talk of Eriko SHIMADA (Kanagawa Institute of Technology, Ph D) is on polymers.
(3) The 3rd Workshop (March6,1997, Shinbashi, Tokyo, 8 members and 2invited speakers)
The invited speaker of Kozo ISHIZAKI (Nagaoka University of Technology, Professor) gave a talk on characterization of ceramic surface. Miyuki HAYASHI (Tokyo Institute of Technology, Ph.D) presented her results on magnetic clusters in amorphous oxide and its interface. The members discussed on the plan to arrange the international symposium.
The final results were summarized in a booklet distributed the booklets to the researchers and engineers who are expected to attend the international symposium.
