Research Abstract |
<Purposes, objectives, and methods of study> At Ise Jingu, the 61st "Shikinen Sengu", the reconstruction of the sanctuary buildings and the renewal of the sacred materials, took place in October, 1993. "Shikinen Sengu" has been playing a core role in the religious ceremonies, piety, history and institutions of Ise Jingu. The tradition of the "Shikinen Sengu" was strictly inherited for centuries though some new elements were taken in with each era. "Shikinen Sengu" is not only the representation of the Shito ceremonies, but also has a strong relationship with such Japanese cultural elements as architecture, public styles of religious piety, and sense of beauty. This study aims to make inquiry into "Shikinen Sengu" which has the above mentioned significance, especially into its entirety at each era and the process of its historical transition.
