Research Abstract |
In this study, we treat the productive and distribution system of roof tiles in Heian Period from both the written documents and archaeological evidence. We Have collected more than 4,000 sources of roof tiles ever published, and these sources are compiled on the data card with the figure of half dimension of the original size, part of which is digitized in order to facilitate the addition of new evidence. We have already added some hundred pieces which have been unearthed by the recent excavation. These new evidence contribute to clarify the realty of the imported roof tiles to the Capital city Heian. For example, the roof tiles produced at Kosei city in Shizuoka prefecture were not consumed locally but were transported to the Capital and other temples as Ninnaji(***) etc.to provide the roof tiles. These tiles can be dated from the latter half of the first quarter to the former half of the second quarter of the 12th century AD.In this period, we know from the historical evidence that the area was governed by Fujiwarano Akinaga as provincial governor (**) From this study, we have elucidate by both the philological and archaeological evidence that the provincial governor must have an important role for the production and transportation of roof tiles.
