Research Abstract |
We researched the situations of the linguistic and cultural exchange between Japan and Germany philologically and tried to show clearly, how the subjects and situations of the linguistic and cultural exchange changed depending on the political relations of the both countries and what roles the adoption of German culture played in Japanese mental history. We checked up all the relevant books, translations, research papers, dictionaries and textbooks published in the Taisho era and the Showa prewar period. Then we classified and arranged all data according to the themes and authors with a computer and made a databage. This database, made with Microsoft Excel, contains two parts, the part of translations and the part of research papers, and has various search functions. Concerning the translations of German literature, we took Goethe's idea of 'world literature' and Grimm's fairly tales as examples, and tried to show how they were translated and accepted by Japanese people in those days. As another result of our research, we also examined the Japan images in the eyes of German people and considered some theoretical problems of intercultural understanding from the viewpoint of comparison and interpretation.
