Research Abstract

In order to characterize surface magnetism with an atomic resolution, the feasibility of the exchange force microscory which probes the exchange force between the tip and sample has been theoretically investigated.
The magnitude of the calculated exchange forces is of the order of 10^<-9>Nat d/a<1 while it is of the order of 10^<-10>N at 1<d/a<1.5, where a is the lattice constant of bulk Fe. The strong variation of the exchange force on the surface sites is observed which means that the surface magnetic image by the exchange force can be clearly demonstrated with atomic resolution. These forces are large enough to be observed because the sensitivity of the current AFM is of the order of 10^<-12> to 10^<-13>N.
In the actual EFM measurements we would face technical difficulty such as a jump effect where the gradient of the force exceeds the magnitude the lever stiffness. In order to measure the exchange force we discuss an exploration of the way to avoid the jump effect.
