Research Abstract

Following results were obtained through this research project.
(1) Factionation of rigid polymer
Fractionation method for rigid polymer was developed basing on GPC,e.g., PBZT and PBZO (molecular length < 40nm) was fractionated.
(2) Effect of the molecular weight distribution on crystal morphology
With fractionated sample, plate like crystals were obtained because of short cilia on both sides of the plate. On the contrary, there is wide distribution of molecular weight in unfractionated sample, many longer cilia stuck out from mother crystal which promoted growing of dauther crystal, hence multi layr plate-like crystals or raft-like aggregates of rod-like crystals were obtained.
(3) Surface morphology of rigid polymer crystals
The crystal surface was examined by an atomic force microscopy. Primary nucleus at the center of the lozenge plate was composed of the longest molecular chains. Along the diagonal, there was a striation.
(4) Effects of isomerism on crystallization and crystal defects
Novel polymer cis-PBZT was synthesized. Its morphology and crystal structure were compared with those of trans-PBZT and the effects of the isomerism were discussed. In the case of cis- PBZT,packing disorder along the chain axis (axial shift) was diminished.
(5) Effects of chemical structure on crystallization and crystal defects
Cis-PBZO which has different element in hetero rings from PBZT was synthesized and crystallized. The effects of chemical structure on the crystallization and crystal defects of rigid polymers were discussed.
