Research Abstract

It is necessary to determine the spacial extent of epileptogenic foci and the functional role of epileptogenic zone in the epilepsy surgery for the cortical epilepsy. It is not difficult to define the central area of the epileptogenic zone, but is difficult to demarcate the marginal zone of the epileptogenic zone. It is also difficult to differentiate between the epileptic activity and the activity electrotonically conducted from the remote epileptogenic zone. From this point of view, it is ideal to interfere transiently the cortical activity in order to evaluate the epileptogenic zone and cortical function. Based on these clinical and sientific background, we evaluated the new technique of the cortical cooling for transient and reversible inactivation of epileptogenic foci. In order to analyze the usefulness of this method, we made animal models such as NER (Noda epileptic rat) and EL mouse. However, the volume of the brain of rats or mice was to small to cool the regional brain or whole brain. Furthermore ; stable cooling of the brain of these animals was also difficult. We therefore analysed the effect of the radiation on the epileptogenic activity in these animals. The inhibitory effect of the radiation on the epileptic activity was revealed. We also studied the effect of the regional cooling on the cerebral epileptic activity in man.
