Research Abstract |
It has been generally summarized that human jaw movement was close relation to their occlusion. Head investigator and investigators of this project, therefore, from their previous research, had suggested the human jaw movement should be rather close relation to craniofacial morphology. The purpose of this project is to identify the relation between human jaw movement and craniofacial morphology in developmental stage with cross-sectional investigation of 5 different stage populations consisted from infant, junior, junior high and high school, and university. In the first year, we had established the methodology of this project which were 1) Craniofacial measurements, 2) Symmetrical examination for face, 3) Examination for masticatory efficiency, 4) Examination for pH level and quantity of saliva, 5) Examination for jaw movement. The investigation for one hundred university students had been carried out with this methodology. Following year, we had carried out the rest of stage populations

while analyzing the previous data of university students. Whole data gethered had been analyzed and discussed in the relation between human jaw movement and craniofacial morphology based on functional development. The summary of results are as follows. 1.Craniofacial measurements Craniofacial dimensions were significantly larger in older stages. 2.Symmetrical Examination for face Prevalence of asymmetry of face was significantly higher in older stages. 3.Examination for masticatory efficiency Masticatory efficiency was significantly grater in older stages. 4.Examination for pH level of saliva The relation between pH level and masticatory efficiency existed at high negative correlation. 5.Examination for jaw movement The prevalence of unstable jaw movement was significantly higher in older stages. These results represent the subject who had an unstable jaw movement had a asymmetrical face and low pH level of saliva. The results from this project has been published as several papers in scientific meetings. Less
