Research Abstract |
The main purpose of this research is to develop an environmental measurement database for educational use, utilizing sensors (automatic data gathering) and the Internet (opening data to the public). Furthermore we aim to examine the measurement network conformed by the exchange of local data gathered by each local school. In addition, we attempt to use the database in the classroom. The environmental database is constructed with sensors for measurement and computers connected to the Internet. Measuremental items are wind direction, wind speed, inside temperature, outside temperature, humidity, barometer, rain fall, UV radiation and solar radiation. Data are at once automatically opened to the public. The system is already being operated in Osaka, Hiroshima and Tokyo. The latest data and optional data are shown through a web brouser utilizing JavaApplet and JavaScript graphically. The data about typhoon number 7 which passed through Osaka in September 23 1998 were duly classified for classroom usage together with properly related information. The lectures are held in cooperation schools and this system is rendered useful for understanding local weather phenomena. Moreover, we are trying to link earthquake and radiation sensors to this system.
