Research Abstract |
Vulcanization of NBR rubber was carried out in a compression mold equipped with two electrodes for the electric measurement. Progress of vulcanization at the temperature of 130゚, 140゚, 150゚, 160゚ and 170゚C was followed by the measurement of dielectric loss tangent (tandelta) and electric current applying alternating voltage. Both of the tandelta and electric current-cure time curves showed a striking resemblance to the torque-cure time curve, which is widely used as a cure curve. That is, the time when the vulcanization is complete (t_<100>) and the apparent activation energy for vulcanization (E_a) obtained from the temperature dependence of t_<100> agreed with those from torquecure time curves obtained by a conventional rheometer. Tandelta and electric current for the NBR composites without sulfur and accelerators increased gradually with time. The cure time dependence of effective crosslink density showed good correlation with tandelta, electric current-cure time curves. The result of electric measurement was discussed considering the rebber coumpounds as dielectric compounds comprised of parallel circuit of condenser (C) and resitance (R).
