Research Abstract

A series of polyesters was synthesized by the bulk polycondensations of the combinations of 1,4 : 3,6-dianhydrohexitols with aliphatic dicarboxylic acid derivatives and with difuranic diesters, i.e., bis (5-methoxycarbonyl)-2-furyl) methane and 1,1-bis(5-methoxycarbonyl)-2-furyl) ethane. To prepare furan-containing polyesters, the polycondensations were carried out at 220-230゚Cin the presence of titanium isopropoxide as a catalyst, giving polyesters haveing number average molecular weight up to 2.4*10^4. Soil burial tests along with enzymatic degradation experiments showed that these polyesters are potentially biodegradable.
Soil burial degradation behavior of miscible blend systems of poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/chitin-graft-poly (2-methyl-1-oxazoline) and PVA/chitin-graft-poly (2-ethyl-2-oxazoline) was investigated in comparison with the case of a pure PVA film. The degradation of the hybrid films was followed by the weight changes, scanning electron microscopic (SEM) observation, FT-IR,^1H NMR,and SEC analyzes. The rate of degradation of the PVA/chitin derivative hybrids was faster than that of pure PVA in the soil burial test.
