Research Abstract |
With the aging of the society and growing economic demands on medical care, the development of an effective and dfficient support system for the aged has become a crucial concern. To develop a better support system for the disabled elderly, telecare -- a care service system using interactive motion picture transmission to meet patients/client's medical and welfare needs in the community -- is being explored and applied in society. The purpose of this research project was to evaluate the existing videophones for the use of telecare ; to develop a new center system to support home telecare ; to develop a heart monitor for home telecare use ; to evaluate the effectiveness and utility of the use of the newly developed home telecare system by carrying out field trials ; to develop a protocol to make use telecare system most effectively ; and to propose conditions required for the wider use of home telecare with the effective application of multimedia technology. Results of the intervention trials using telecare systems on ISDN into home healthcare services showed that telecare service improved the clients'independence in activity of daily living (ALD), communication independence, and social cognition independence. Telecare is able to provide higher quality care for the elderly in communities by greatly improving the level of independence of the elderly with disbilities. The followings are the areas that the protocol of telecare system need to cover : to facilitate use of multimedia information, to share skills of the professionals, to provide guidelines of telecare which meet indivedual patients'needs, and to encourage new intervention techniques in telecare. Wider use of telecare systems with sufficient support of the protocol and involvement of home healthcare professionals was considered to be able to provide effective and efficient care for the elderly.
