Research Abstract

We performed pars plana vitrectomy with intraocular ultraviolet irradiation system (LA-200 UV.wave length 365nm, Hayashi Tokei KK) and coagulated the retinal surface. The we examined the effects of this irradiation system by using biocular fundud examination and histopathological sections. The duration of irradiation were 30 sec(group 1), 3 min(group 2). 10 mio(group 3). In the group 1, we observed the serous retinal detachment, however the damage of choroid was relatively minimal. By using fluorescein fundus angiography. we observed the damage of retinal pigment epitherial layer, and histopathologically there were minimal change in the sensory retina and choroid. In the group 3, we observed the severe atrophy of choroid and retina and the color of irradiated retina turned pale. Histopathologically all retinal layers were disappeared and the damage of the choroid were remarkable.
With all oue results the intraocular ultraviolet irradiation caused the miminal damage to the retina and choroid with minimal power, however the severe damage with high power energy. There are some possibility that this intraocular ultraviolet irradiation system would be available to treat the intraocular proliferative diseases, such as proliferative vitreoretinopathy, proliferative diabetic retinopathy, retinal vein occlusion, and intraocular tumors, such as retinal hemangioma and choroidal hemangioma.
