Research Abstract |
They say that the Cartesianism, which was welcome in his own country in the second half of the seventeenth century, lost its influence in the eighteenth century. This is, in itself, free from misunderstandings. But the Cartesian thought did not become extinct in this century. Still more, in the nineteenth century came about the phemomenon of Cartesian Renaissance. If it is the case, there had to be some inheritance of Cartesianism in the eighteenth century. The problem to make clear was that in what form the Cartesianism was inherited and the Myth of Descartes was composed and developed. 1) The development of the critical method in Fontenell who took over the Cartesianism. We examined how the critical spirit in the Cartesian Method be continued and be applied to the concrete problems in the Fontenelle's writings 2) The examination of the concept Myth in the expression of Myth of Descartes. With the critical application of the concept Myth which was used by Rollan Barthes and Gilbert Ryle, we situated the concept Myth of Descartes in the studies of Cartesianism in the Eighteenth France from the view point of history of ideas. 3) Reexamination and rectification in the studies that were accomplished. Referring to the studies of the history of ideas in the eighteenth century France, we stove for filing up these studies. For example the problem of Descartes and feminism was reexamined by Cartesian Women. Versions and Subversions of Rational Discourse in the Old Regime (Erica Harth, Ithaca and London, 1992). 4) Cartesian Renaissance. We took a general survey of Cartesian thought in nineteenth century from the point view of Myth of Descartes. 5) Bibliography. We drew up a bibliography of the studies concerning with the Myth of Descartes and provided with the documents about these studies.
