Research Abstract

The purpose of this study is to investigate the mother' s judgment of infant emotions and its relation to mother-child interaction. Emde(1988) developed I Feel Picture Test to evaluate maternal emotional availability and referencing, and Innoue et al. (1989, 1990, ) also developed Japanese I Feel Picture Test.
In study 1, 29 mother-child pairs were attended this study. Mothers' mean age was 29.70 years and children' was 19.20 months. Free play and their interaction for 10 minutes were observed, and after that, mothers completed JIFPT and SDS, STAI and emotional responses to their infants scales. In study 2, 129 mothers of 0-12 months children were completed the questionaires on their experiences of birth and mother- ing. In study 3, 5 mothers completed JIFPT, SDS scales, and mothering questionaires. The results were as fol1ows. 1) Depressive mothers percieved neutral in emotion to infant facial expression and they interacted less with their children. Some mother reported that because their birth experience were negative, they felt their mother- ing was very hard. 2) The experiences of birth effected mothers' child rearing and their life as mothers. 3) It was suggested that various experiences with children expanded mother' s view and their attitude for their children.
