| Research Abstract |
The purpose of this study was to examine the clinical validity of' Japanese version of Growing : Birth to three which was originally developed by Portage project in 1993 at Portage in Wisconsin USA and used as early intervention curriculum for children with developmental disabilities and their families who need developmental and family supports.
Growing : Birth to three consists of a number of distinct pieces as follows ; Piecing it all together describes the research and literature foundation of Growing : Birth to three. Part I of Ecological Planner suggests guideline for observation and communication. and Part II is Developmental Observation Guide which provides a developmentally sequenced series of behaviors that children display from birth through 36 months. Interactive Grow Pack suggests for facilitating mutually satisfying interactions between parents and children. Nurturing Journals, Master forms and Interactions and Daily Routine Books are included.
Considering for Japanese cultural background, language system and so on, English version of Growing : Birth to three was translated into Japanese. Japanese version of Growing : Birth to three offers a practical application of the transactional model of intervention that is guided by family and ecological approach.
As the results of application by using Japanese version of Growing : Birth to three, three children with Down syndrome achieved a number of behavioral objectives and showed developmental progress, it was suggested that this early intervention curriculum was useful for children with developmental disabilities such as Down syndrome and their families.
