Research Abstract

In this research, the relationships among Type A personality, hostility, and stress reactions were investigated. In addition, the effects of social support which lays between these personalities and stress reactions were examined. As a result, the following research results were obtained.
1. In adult subjects, the positive relationship between the hostility in the components of Type A personality and stress reactions were clear, and the social suport showed the negative general relationships with the stress reactions. In addition, when the state extraction was done so that the stress reactions might become the result of the causal relation, the social support reduced the detrimental influence from hostility to depressive and fatigue stress of men, only in the case that hostility was not so strong.
2. The results in adults were confirmed almost similarly in school children. The positive relationship between hostility and the whole stress reaction was admitted in this research of fourth to sixth grade children of the elementary school. Moreover, the negative relations between the social support and the stress reactions were confirmed in a lot of support sources, and mainly in depression and spiritless stress reactions, the buffering effects of social support on the influence from hostility to stress were admitted. However, the content of the effects was different depending on the kind of the support.
Thus, a healthy effect of social support and an unhealthy effect of hostility were admitted from the above-mentioned results at various developmental stages. From these results, not only the necessity to decrease hostility and enhance social support for stress reduction was pointed out, but also a profitable finding was obtained for educational and interventional tries in this area, the effects of the support when hostility was low being emphasized.
