Research Abstract |
This year I conducted research with the following goals and methods in mind : A) To create a system for day-service project evaluation by the service users (elder citizens) themselves and their family members (care takers), I studied ways of setting up day-service that give elders control of their own care. In order to achieve these goals, I conducted the following research : 1.I distributed questionnaires to 35 NAGATSUDA day-service users, and 113 MATSUMOTO day-service users from February 21st to March 15th, 1997. 2.I visited 11 NAGATSUDA day-service center users, and conducted interviews with them to follow up on the 1996 research. B) I studied the role and function of day-service within the "Senior Citizens' health and welfare plan" in the local area and in the home nursing support system. I interviewed the people in charge of these matters, some in the large city MUSASHINO,and some in the local areas (IKEDA town and TOYOTA city) where home nursing support systems are formed at the dist

rict level. I discovered the following points in my research : A) I were able to organize a model for a new "user-centered" day-service project, which incorporates the following points : 1.Development of a wide variety of games and other recreational programs that elders can enjoy. It is important to work on activities and not treat elders like children. 2.It is important to arrange group activities that encourage cooperation, but moreover I must understand the personality, physical condition, and life history of each individual and give the appropriate support both mental and physical. 3.It is important to keep the purpose of the day-service projects in mind, and consider the daily lives of the elders. 4.I need to create programs that encourage the elders themselves to play an active role and develop their own abilities. B) I found that it is important to cooperatively organize day-service and other home nursing support systems in order to improve welfare services for elders who need support at home, and to guarantee a Quality of 1Life for them. Day-service has an important role to play for elders in need of home care in the following areas : 1.Eliminating feelings of isolation in the society 2.Taking care of elders' physical and mental condition 3.Reducing the physical and mental burden on family members (care-givers) 4.Increasing the effectiveness of welfare and medical services by promoting communication between service users and center staff. It is important, from now on, to build a close relationship between day-service projects and other home support systems in order to improve the entire home nursing system. There is also a need for official nursing insuranc. Less
