Research Abstract

In the present study, a survey was conducted among 313 music majors on their choice of colleges. An analysis was made of when, from whom, and how they acquired their music knowledge and techniques, how they formed interest and prefernces in music, and hwo these factors functioned in their choice of colleges.
The survery was conducted of graduate and undergraduate students of music colleges and junior colleges, using the questionaire prepared based on the aforementioned purposes.
The findings are as follows :
1.Eighty-five percent of the respondents began a certain kind of music education by the age of seven.
2.The respondents received plural kinds of music education in an overlapping form for a long period of time before they enterd colleges, and many of them relied on private lessons except at the initial stage.
3.In regard to the reasons for beginning music education, strong infuluence existed from family members who had the experience of music education.
4.Seventy-five percent decided to go to music college after the age of twelve.
5.School education has multiple functions in their decision of colleges.
6.In regard to the career choice after graduation, the largest number of respondents hope to teach music and few chose to become professional performers. There is, however, a high degree of interest in new areas of occupation in music, which indicates the trend of diversifying carreer aspirations.
7.The educational background and music experience of parents have infuluence on the cultural activities of the respondents in their childhood. A further detailed study, however, is needed on the mechanism of cultural reproduction in the field of music.
