Research Abstract |
In 1996-1997, head investigator of this research project studied the perspective of the all T,ang Funerary inscriptions, and edited the union catalog of these inscriptions. In China, with its strong historical tradition, rubbings have assumed an important role in the intellectual life of the country, and studies on stone engravings is a special branch of formal study which began in the Northern Sung in the eleventh centry. But for a halt (1920・30-1980・90), numerous T'ang funerary inscriptions (ink rubbings) have little been made public, and usually catalogs are not available. This is strange contradiction to the actual use and value of rubbings. However, recently (1980-1990), the many T'ang funerary inscriptions (ink rubbings) have been published, and these new collections total 16,800 (real number : 5,500). At present, these many recently published collections are most likely the largest and most comprehensive in the world. The basic purpose of this cataloging profect on these all T'ang funerary inscriptions is to bring the new information to the public. This present catalog is the first one of its kind in the world.
