Research Abstract |
In order to make the foundations of text-linguistic approach to nonce formation, the provisional coinage of a single word to substitute for a sequence of words, we made a descriptive study of "Syntagmatic Nonce Word (SNW)". SNW is a sort of nonce word which has "the corresponding sequence of words (CSW)" in the same text. Based on the investigation of Japanese condensational texts (scientific texts and newspaper articles), we demonstrate production and usage of SNW as follows. 1. There exist two types of SNW,one is preceded by CSW and the other is followed by CSW in a text. 2. SNW and CSW are located at various intervlas from in the same sentence to in the different and distant paragraphs. 3. CSW has various forms, i.e., word group, phrase, clause, sentence, and so on. 4. In newspaper articles, SNW is used more in science, editorial and 1-3 page articles than in book review, sports, entertainments, home life, culture, and social pages.
