Research Abstract |
1. The seeming absence of mothers in Shakespeare is probably due to the patriarchal culture in which Shakespeare worked. He intentionally or unintentionally disregarded mothers and left them out in the family relations in his plots. 2. The argument that mothers' absence is caused by the limited number and ability of the boy-actors of the company is not tenable. Not young, or rather middle-aged, women that appear in the plays from Romeo and Juliet to Coriolanus are the proof of the existence of the veteran boy-actor(s). 3. Shakespeare's four great tragedies deal the problems of sexuality in the family relationship seen from the male point of view, i,e. the male playwright's point of view. The mother-daughter relationship is missing. 4. The relationship between mother and son to the exclusion of the father figure is detailed in Hamlet, All's Well That Ends Well and Coriolanus. 5. On the other hand, the close father-daughter relationship is foregrounded in King Lear, Cymbeline and The Tempest, in which all of the mothers are already dead.
