Research Abstract |
A Japanese linguist and philosopher Tsugio SEKIGUCHI (1894-1958) gave convincing and objective solutions to many difficult grammatical problems such as the use of the article. This was possible for Sekiguchi because his grammar was what he called "Semantic-Form-Grammar", "synthetic" grammar, i. e. a grammar of "expression", not for "understanding". A great number of sentences from 14 languages which he had collected for 30 years lie in the background for this linguistic research conducted by Sekiguchi. The purpose of the present research should be understood as a part of the following large research project : to describe a "grammar of expression" by using the sentences collected by Sekiguchi and to show the important meaning of this grammar in the research of languages. The aims of the present project are : 1. to give answers to questions about Sekiguchi's collection, especially whether the collection will contribute to other researchers' studies if it is available to them, 2. to input Sato's research materials about Sekiguchi's "Semantic- Form-Grammar" into the computer, 3. to input a part of Sekiguchi's collection classified in the files titled "preposition", "result", "subjectivity" and others. Several views of linguistic permit researchers to put Sekigu- chi's collected sentences to good use. The real value of the collection will be appreciated if they are seen from the view of the "synthetic" grammar, in which there are two approaches : 1. how and in how many types the "universal meanings" can be classified, 2. how words can be "synthesized" in phrases, phrases in sentences, and simple sentences in compound sentences. The second approach is especially important because synthesizing two components means producing a "depending relation" between them, which is nothing but the "language structure". The database as a result of the present research project will contribute to describing such a synthetic grammar.
