Research Abstract |
The purpose of this project is to invert broadband seismic waveform data (including both body and surface wave) for 3-D heterogeneous whole Earth structure (including both core and mantle). We have previously developed a new criterion for highly accurate computations of synthetic seismograms and their partial derivatives without increasing CPU time and an efficient algorithm for waveform inversion. In this project we developed a new method and software for this inversion using above results. We have confirmed quantitatively that such inversion became possible using our new methods. We also developed new methods to computate highly accurate synthetic seismograms which are suitable for other type of seismic waveform inversion. We could see that our criterion for the accurate computation is widely applicable and various type of seismic study of the internal structure (including oil exploration) can be done accurately using our theory.
