Research Abstract |
With the aim of developing new energy resources, construction of an artificial photosynthetic system which produces fuels from sunshine and water has been investigated. By utilizing electrode-coated polymer membranes containing dispersed functional molecules, water oxidation catalyst, carbon dioxide reduction catalyst, and proton reduction catalyst have been studied. As for the water oxidation catalyst, it has been found that ammine-coordinated trinuclear Ru complex (Ru-red) shows high activity when adsorbed into platinum black. Its activity. could successfully be analyzed based on distribution of the molecule-to-molecule distance of the dispersed complex. By using this catalyst system coupled with a Nafion membrane containing dispersed sensitizer, Ru (bpy) 32+, and by designing a bilayr system, it was succeeded to construct a photoelectrochemical water oxidation system to evolve dioxygen. For C02 reduction, cobalt-phthalocyanine (CoPc) has been found to have a high catalytic activity. The activity of its derivatives has been studied, and a new reaction mechanism proposed which involves third electron injection to the complex catalyst.
