Research Abstract |
The rash of suicides by junior high school and senior high school students brought on by bullying, i.e.the intimidation and terrorizing of one student by a group of fellow students, has become a major social issue in recent times. At long last, interest is beginning to focus on this issue as a school health problem, and more specifically, a mental health problem. However, from a clinical standpoint, adolescent psychiatry is a difficult area, and most problems of this nature are handled on a case-by-case basis. When it comes to suicide, the most serious and important issue in psychiatric medicine, we have yet to see any genuine psychiatric research based on investigations into the actual conditions relating to this phenomenon. This research was based on a self-prepared questionnaire survey on emotional stress aimed at all junior high school and senior high school students in Mie Prefecture. Contrary to initial planning, this survey wound up focusing on junior high school students in an effort to bring it more in line with the realities of the current situation. Since the researchers were able to talk directly with the principals at all the junior high schools, they were able to come away with a much deeper understanding of the actual circumstances surrounding these school issues. And by obtaining data from teachers as well, the survay was able to get closer to the essence of the research theme than had been expected. There have also been successive news reports of schools being recently vandalized. If analysis of the invaluable data gleaned via the recent survey project proves useful in helping to alleviate the current situation in Japanese junior high schools, this would indeed be an extremely significant event.
