Research Abstract |
To measure apparent diffusion coefficients (ADCs) of water in liver, spleen and kidney, 15 volunteers (ten men, aged 27-41 years) underwent magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Spin-echo type excitation and echo-planar images were obtained with a 1.5-T echo-planar MR imaging system. MPG pulse was applied along readout direction. The range of b-values was 3.9-251 sec/mm<@D12@>D1, and the echo time was 70 msec. All studies were performed using both a body coil and a GPFlex coil. Using a GPflex coil and a rectangular FOV,an adequate signal-to-noise ratio was obtained. The mean and standard deviation of the ADC values were as follows : liver, 2.32 (]SY.+-。[) 0.66*10<@D1-3@>D1mm<@D12@>D1/sec ; spleen, 2.88 (]SY.+-。[) 0.80*10<@D1-3@>D1mm<@D12@>D1/sec ; pancreas, 2.65 (]SY.+-。[) 0.83*10<@D1-3@>D1mm<@D12@>D1/sec ; and renal cortex, 4.25 (]SY.+-。[) 1.55*10<@D1-3@>D1mm<@D12@>D1/sec. The mean value of ADC in patients with liver cirrhosis was significantly lower than that in volunteers (P<0.05). The mean and standard deviation of the ADC values in the various abdominal lesions were as follows : hepatocellular carcinomas (n=22), 3.13 (]SY.+-。[) 1.02*10<@D1-3@>D1mm<@D12@>D1/sec ; liver metastases (n=10), 2.38 (]SY.+-。[) 0.33*10<@D1-3@>D1mm<@D12@>D1/sec ; renal cysts (n=9), 4.48 (]SY.+-。[) 1.31*10<@D1-3@>D1mm<@D12@>D1/sec ; and renal cell carcinoma (n=1), 6.37 *10<@D1-3@>D1mm<@D12@>D1/sec. In conclusion ADC appears to be a unique parameter for abdominal disease.
