Research Abstract |
In this study, we investigated semantic processing with event-related fields (ERF_s) by analyzing them along with event-related potentials (ERP_s) elicited with visually presented words in the region including the left temporal, parietal and occipital areas. Five students (one female) ranging in age from 21 to 24 years were recruited as subjects from Hokkaido University. All of them were right-handed. A lexical decision task was employed to elicit ERP_s and ERF_s. Each trial consisted of a warning, a prime and a target stimulus. The prime and target were words made up of two chinese characters, with some of the target being pseudo words. The following four target conditions were presented according to the semantic and phonological relationship between each target and its preceding prime : 1) a homophone condition, in which the target was preceded by a prime that had the same sound as the target but which was semantically unrelated, 2) a semantically related condition, in which the target was preceded by a prime that was semantically related to the target, 3) a semantically unrelated condition, in which the target was preceded by a prime that was semantically unrelated to the target, or 4) a pseudo word condition, in which the target was a pseudo word. Subjects were required to press the button to the pseudo word targets. EEG_s were recorded with a digital EEG.MEG_s were recorded with a 19-channel SQUID system ERP_s and ERF_s were averaged off-line.Equivalent current dipoles (ECD_s)with a goodness of fit > 90% and correlation of magnetic field > 95g were selected for the analysis. ECD_s were superimposed on MRI_s. In four out of the five subjects, ECD_s were located in the temporoparieto-occipital junction without any obvious difference in location among stimulus conditions. This suggests that the words were processed in this area.
